Tieke Golf Estate traces back to the sheep-grazed Lochiel Golf Club of 1938, which merged with neighbouring club The Narrows in 2014 to form Riverside Golf Club before a major 2018 redesign by Brett Thomson and Phil Tataurangi created the course as it stands today. Carved from Waikato River terraces near Tamahere, the rebuild cleared more than a thousand trees and shrubs to expose free-draining sandy soils that give the layout an unlikely links-style character despite sitting well inland. Fine fescue and bentgrass greens are uncommon touches for the region.
