Tauranga Golf Club traces back to 1904, when future mayor Dr William Brown convened the first meetings for a course at the Tauranga Domain - a site so contested with rugby matches that the club relocated to its current Racecourse Reserve grounds in 1914, where Auckland professional Fred Rutter laid out the new course. Through the 1930s depression, club president A.J. Mirrielees used government work schemes to plant 30,000 trees and shrubs that still shape the landscape today, and the 18-hole course remains an inclusive, welcoming club just 10 minutes from central Tauranga.
