3.4 RNZAF Auckland Golf Club plays across an operational Defence Force air base at Whenuapai, where minimal tree cover leaves wind as the main defence and out-of-bounds markers sit close to active runways. A section of the course borders the base's old Bomb Dump, and roughly 500 members - service personnel and civilians alike - play under periodic closures for parachute operations and other Defence Force needs. Visitors may only play as a member's guest, given base security.
