Redwood Park
New Zealand > North Island > Auckland
Redwood Park's grounds began life as a 1920s picnic and recreation ground, renamed after 3,000 redwood trees were planted there in 1934; the site later served as a wartime military camp and a major motor camp through the 1950s, even hosting a 20,000-strong pop concert in 1970. Locals voted that same year to convert the grounds into an 18-hole golf course, built up over difficult early years through volunteer effort, and it now sits in parkland at the foot of the Waitakere Ranges, marketed as one of Auckland's most affordable clubs.
