Paraparaumu Beach
New Zealand > North Island > Wellington
Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club was designed in 1949 by Alex Russell, the former Australian Open champion and design partner of Alister MacKenzie, who found the site's volcanic sand base an ideal medium to work with. Kapiti Island sits offshore, and wind plays a genuine role in testing the layout. Five-time British Open champion and nine-time New Zealand Open winner Peter Thomson loved the course instantly on first sight, predicting it would "be famed for a century yet" - a monument to golf course design as art.
