Otago (Balmacewen)
New Zealand > South Island > Otago
Otago Golf Club traces back to September 1871, when 28 members first played nine holes across a Dunedin pasture under founding captain Charles Ritchie Howden - regarded as the father of New Zealand golf. That original Mornington course, with Fogarty's Hotel doubling as the country's first "nineteenth hole," folded around 1876, and organised golf in the city didn't resume for almost two decades. The separate Otago Ladies' Golf Club, founded in 1892, hosted New Zealand's first Amateur Championships in 1893; both clubs settled at the current Balmacewen course in 1896 and formally amalgamated in 2009, making Otago one of the oldest golf clubs in the Southern Hemisphere.
