Mahunga Golf Club began life as the Solway Golf Club in July 1931, based at the Masterton showgrounds, before relocating to ninety acres at Akura in 1935 and taking its current name. The eighteen-hole course opened that April on two levels, with a meandering stream and views of the Tararuas among its natural features. The historic Donald Homestead, a 40-tonne building of heart totara, rimu and kauri, was relocated to the site in 1966 to serve as the clubhouse, after the club weathered damaging floods in 1947 and 1953.
