Harewood
New Zealand > South Island > Canterbury
Harewood Golf Club was founded in 1923 on land leased from the Waimakariri River Trust, but the Depression forced the young club to fold when banks called in its loan guarantees. Founder Ray Blank revived it in 1956 with a wave of younger members rebuilding the course through volunteer labour, and a second course designed by JD Harris followed in 1967. After selling land for airport expansion, the club reinvested the proceeds into a major renovation of its Woodlands Course by architects Turner Macpherson, adding a 20-bay driving range and cementing Harewood's reputation as one of the most talked-about courses in the country.
