Ellesmere Golf Club traces back to around 1894, when Dr George Gosset and Bank of New Zealand manager Richard Loudon founded the Leeston Golf Club, a nine-hole course at the local A&P showgrounds. The club moved to Ellesmere Domain Board land in 1900 and took its current name in 1913 when Gosset became president; horse racing on the grounds ceased in 1928, leaving the land solely for golf. The course expanded to thirteen holes in 1931 and reached its current eighteen in 1965, with a fairway watering system added in the 1990s.
