Belleknowes Golf Club was established in 1923 when the Dunedin City Council allocated town-belt land for a nine-hole course, styling itself "the country club in the heart of the city." A Scottish professional, Mr A. Fox, served the club for 22 years from its founding, and at its peak the course drew 72 competitors to men's events. A devastating fire destroyed the clubhouse, trophies and historical records on a snowy night in June 2021, but the club rebuilt in time to mark its centenary in October 2023 with a redesigned, notably improved par-three 2nd.
